CADBORO BAY
The owners of this Cadboro Bay beach bungalow wanted a new kitchen and a more open layout to accommodate their growing family.
The original 8-foot ceilings in the living, dining, and kitchen areas made the home feel closed in. To transform the space, we removed the interior walls and lifted the roof structure, replacing it with scissor trusses to create a cathedral ceiling. The added height and volume dramatically changed the character of the home, turning what was once a compact layout into an open, airy living space. New windows and skylights now flood the combined living, dining, and kitchen areas with natural light.
At the heart of the project is the new kitchen, featuring European cabinetry with book-matched walnut door and drawer fronts. The island is wrapped in distinctive vertical reeded millwork and topped with rich black Corian countertops, creating a striking focal point within the space.
With the cooktop located on the island, a retractable pop-up downdraft ventilation system was integrated into the cabinetry. The vent rises from the countertop when needed and disappears when not in use, eliminating the need for a traditional overhead hood and maintaining clean sightlines throughout the room.
The existing open-hearth fireplace was restored and now adds warmth and texture to the otherwise minimalist interior. Wide-plank oak flooring and contemporary lighting complete the transformation of this bright, modern coastal home.
